How to Switch to Mushroom Coffee Without Quitting Caffeine Overnight

The first time I “switched to mushroom coffee,” I did it on a Monday, cold turkey, because a podcast made it sound like a personality transplant.

By 10am I had a headache that felt like a tax. By 2pm I was in a drive-thru. I told myself mushroom coffee was a lie. It was not a lie. It was withdrawal plus a new flavor plus five children who do not care about Lion’s Mane.

I am a mom of five. I like caffeine. I do not like the 11am shake or the 9pm second wind that is really just anxiety in a mug. Mushroom coffee is not magic mushrooms and it is not decaf pretending to be a lifestyle. It is usually less caffeine plus functional mushrooms (Lion’s Mane, cordyceps, sometimes chaga) so the cup is a little kinder. The switch fails when you treat it like sobriety week.

This is the 14-day version that actually stuck. Ranked taste-offs live in Ryze vs Everyday Dose and the mushroom coffee roundup. This is the process.

What you are actually switching

Regular drip in this house is roughly 80–140mg of caffeine a cup, depending on how aggressive I was with the scoop. Many mushroom coffees land closer to half of that, or they keep coffee and add L-theanine / mushrooms so the same caffeine feels less jagged.

You might get:

  • a milder lift,
  • less of the “I could fight a parking meter” edge,
  • a taste that is earthier than Dunkin’.

You will not get a medical cure. If your heart is doing something new, that is a clinician, not a bag of Ryze.

The 14-day switch (do not skip day 1–3)

Days 1–3: blend, do not replace.
Half regular coffee, half mushroom coffee. Same mug, same morning chaos. Your brain still gets caffeine. Your taste buds start the introduction.

Days 4–7: first cup is mushroom, second cup is regular if you need it.
This is the week people quit because they wanted the second cup to also be a TED Talk. Keep the second cup regular if you have a headache. Headaches are not a character test.

Days 8–14: two mushroom cups, or one mushroom and tea.
If you still want a 2pm espresso, have it. The goal is less jagged, not a purity contest.

If you skip the blend week, you will call mushroom coffee disgusting and go back to the gas station roast. I already did that experiment for you.

Do not buy five bags on day one. Buy one. Finish the blend week. Then hate it or keep it.

Cuppa — the “please still taste like coffee” start

Cuppa is the bag I hand to people who will riot if it tastes like dirt. Instant, Arabica, mushrooms you are not supposed to taste, L-theanine so the caffeine has a babysitter. If the blend week is going to work, it has to taste like a cup of coffee you do not have to apologize for.

Try Cuppa mushroom coffee

The starter bag if you want Arabica, not a camping-stove experiment. Instant. Blend it with your regular pot for a week.

Ryze and Everyday Dose — the two names you already know

If you want the comparison nerd version, I already wrote Ryze vs Everyday Dose. For the switch: Ryze if you like a straightforward instant. Everyday Dose if you want it to feel more like a mocha and less like a wellness assignment.

Use UNCONVENTIONALSAHM15 on Ryze. Everyday Dose is $10 off through the link.

MUD\WTR — when you are actually trying to drink less coffee

This is not a stealth latte. It is a spiced cacao-mushroom drink. If you hate it in a blend with coffee, that is data, not failure — you wanted coffee. If you like chai and want the caffeine drop, this is the lane. MOM247 is 20% off.

MUD\\WTR — 20% off with MOM247

Use code MOM247. This is the bigger caffeine cut. Do not start here if you still need a diner cup to feel human.

Javvy — the breakfast cup

Javvy is the one that plays with protein breakfast in this house. Lion’s Mane, actual roast flavor, 20% off with NICHOLE186. If the switch is going to survive school mornings, it has to sit next to pancakes without a TED Talk.

Rules that keep you from quitting on Wednesday

  • Do not drop from three coffees to zero mushroom cups. That is a migraine, not a cleanse.
  • Eat something. Caffeine on an empty stomach is how “mushroom coffee gave me anxiety” stories start. Often it was hunger.
  • Give the taste ten cups, not two. Cup two is still “this is not Dunkin’.” Cup ten is “this is just my cup.”
  • Keep one regular coffee as a tool. Church potluck coffee can stay terrible. You are not converting the urn.

FAQ

Will I get a caffeine headache?

If you jump off a cliff, yes. Blend for three days. That is the whole method.

Is this decaf?

Usually no. Read the bag. MUD\WTR is the lower-caffeine vibe. Cuppa is still coffee.

Can I put it in a regular coffee maker?

Instant goes in a mug. If you buy a ground version, follow that bag. Do not dump instant into a drip basket and email me.

Is this medical advice?

No. If you are pregnant, have blood pressure issues, or caffeine does something scary, talk to a clinician. I am a former pediatric SLP who drinks coffee next to a high chair.

The 14-day version, even shorter

Blend half-and-half for three days. First cup mushroom for a week. Then decide. Cuppa if you need it to taste like coffee. Ryze or Everyday Dose if you already know those names. MUD\WTR if you want less caffeine for real. Javvy if breakfast is the ritual you will actually keep.

The mushrooms are not the hard part. The hard part is not lying to yourself about how much coffee you were drinking.
