I used to treat a headache as a moral failure and a water bottle as the fix.
Then I drank 40 ounces, peed like a science fair, and still felt like my brain was wearing socks. Coffee had been my first three drinks. Water was the fourth. Nobody mentioned salt.
I am a mom of five. I like coffee. I sweat in workouts and also in the emotional way that is just July in a minivan. Hydration is water plus electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium — not a bigger Hydro Flask. If you want the physiology lecture, I already wrote Electrolytes 101 and a Buoy review. This is the coffee-first protocol I actually use.
This is not medical advice. If you have high blood pressure, kidney disease, or you were told to limit sodium, this page is not your care plan.
Why “just drink more water” backfires after three coffees
Coffee is a diuretic for some people, mildly. The bigger issue in my house is I replace breakfast fluids with caffeine and then chug water at 11am. Water without sodium can leave you feeling puffy, headachy, and weirdly thirsty. The clinical word people throw around is hyponatremia. The mom word is “I feel hungover and I did not even go out.”
Signs I actually wait for before I start squeezing drops into everything:
- headache that water does not touch,
- salt cravings that are not just “I walked past pretzels,”
- muscle twinges after a workout that was not even impressive,
- brain fog that improves after a salty meal more than after another latte.
If you have those and you also live on coffee, try electrolytes for a week before you buy a new nootropic.
The protocol: drops in the coffee you are already drinking
I will not add a fourth beverage if I can hijack the first one.
Buoy is an unflavored-ish liquid electrolyte you squeeze into coffee, water, or a smoothie. That is why it survives mornings. Powders want a whole production. Drops go in the mug I was going to drink anyway. My link is 31% off plus a free gift.
How I use it:
- First coffee: Buoy in the mug. Eat something. (Electrolytes on nothing but caffeine is still a bad time.)
- Water bottle: one squeeze if I am heading to a workout or it is 90 degrees.
- I do not dose every sip all day like a salt vampire. More is not a personality.
L-theanine is in Buoy’s story; I notice the coffee feels less jagged. Your mileage may be a Tuesday.
Buoy — 31% off plus a free gift
Squeeze it into the coffee you are already drinking. 31% off plus a free gift through this link. Not a reason to skip food.
Shop Buoy Hydration →When a powder earns the extra step: Thorne
Drops are the daily. Thorne Daily Electrolytes is the scoop I use when I actually trained, or I was outside, or I can tell the drops-in-coffee trick is not enough. NSF-minded brand, sugar-free, 10% off through my link. Full review: Thorne Daily Electrolytes.
Use the powder when there is sweat. Use the drops when there is coffee. If you use both every hour you will be very salty and very wrong.
Thorne Daily Electrolytes — 10% off
The workout / heat scoop. 10% off through this link. Pair with Buoy in coffee, do not stack them like a dare.
Shop Thorne →What I do not do
- Sports drinks with a candy aisle of sugar for a 25-minute walk.
- Salt tablets I saw on a podcast, unsupervised.
- Gallon challenges. That is a bladder sport.
Eat. A little sodium at breakfast (eggs, not just oat milk) does more than a sad liter of plain water after three americanos.
If your greens powder is also your “hydration,” it is not. Greens are not lunch and they are not electrolytes either.
FAQ
Can I put Buoy in mushroom coffee?
Yes. It is still coffee-ish liquid. I have done it. Taste is fine if you do not use a novel’s worth of drops.
How do I know it is working?
Headache eases. You stop feeling like you ran a marathon in a parking lot. If nothing changes in a week, the issue might be sleep, iron, or the fact that you are only eating crackers. Electrolytes are not a plot twist for every problem.
Is this the same as LMNT?
Same idea (sodium-forward), different format. Buoy is drops. Thorne is a tub. I care that you will use it.
POTS or pregnancy?
Those are clinician conversations. I mention POTS in the Buoy review because readers ask. I do not diagnose you from a blog.
The coffee-first version
Put Buoy in the first mug (31% off + gift). Eat. Water as usual. Thorne when you actually sweat. Stop trying to hydrate with caffeine and then drowning yourself at noon.
The headache was not a mystery. It was a mineral problem wearing a coffee habit.
